Approving Your Quarterly MTD Filing

Approving Your Quarterly MTD Filing

This article explains how to review and approve your quarterly Making Tax Digital (MTD) Income Tax filing in ApariPro. Your accountant will prepare the submission and send it to you for approval before it is submitted to HMRC.

What is client approval?

Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you are required to file quarterly updates to HMRC — covering your self-employed or rental income and expenses for each three-month period.

Before your accountant submits your quarterly filing to HMRC, they will send it to you for review. This gives you the opportunity to check the figures and confirm you are happy with the information being submitted on your behalf.

You will receive a notification when your filing is ready for your approval.

What you will need

  • Access to your ApariPro client account

  • The login details you were provided when you were set up on ApariPro

  • A few minutes to review your quarterly figures

How to approve your quarterly filing

Step 1: Log in to your ApariPro account

  1. Go to your ApariPro client portal and sign in with your email address and password.

  2. If this is your first time logging in, use the invitation link sent to you by your accountant and follow the on-screen instructions to set your password.

Step 2: Find your quarterly filing

  1. Once logged in, select Tax Submission from the left hand menu

  2. Select the MTD period, and open up the business source menu

  3. Select View

Step 3: Review your figures

Take a moment to review the information your accountant has prepared. This will include:

  • Your income for the quarter (e.g. self-employment earnings or rental income)

  • Your expenses for the quarter

  • Your calculated tax position based on the figures submitted so far this year

Note: The quarterly filing covers your business income and expenses only. Other adjustments — such as personal allowances or additional income sources — are handled in your annual tax return.

Step 4: Approve the filing

  1. Once you are satisfied with the figures, click Approve Submission.

  2. Your accountant will be notified of your approval and will proceed to submit the filing to HMRC.

Once you have approved your filing, your accountant will handle the submission to HMRC. You do not need to take any further action unless they contact you.

What if something looks wrong?

If you notice anything that does not look correct — for example, a figure that seems too high or too low — do not approve the filing. Instead:

  1. Contact your accountant directly and explain what you have noticed.

  2. Your accountant will review the information, make any necessary changes, and send the updated filing back to you for approval.

Your accountant can update the filing and resend it to you as many times as needed before it is submitted to HMRC. You will receive an email notification once the request for approval has been triggered by your accountant.

Quarterly filing deadlines

Under MTD for Income Tax, quarterly filings are due four times a year. The deadlines are:

  • Quarter 1 (April to June) — deadline: 5 August

  • Quarter 2 (July to September) — deadline: 5 November

  • Quarter 3 (October to December) — deadline: 5 February

  • Quarter 4 (January to March) — deadline: 5 May
